Chapter Nine
âDo come in.â Sighing inwardly, David waited as his butler stepped into the room. âYes, Burch?â Lifting one eyebrow, he waited for his butler to respond, and was a little surprised when the man clasped both hands in front of him and looked away. This was most unlike the fellow. âBurch.â David spoke a little more firmly. âI am soon to go to my guests - whatever the matter is, pray tell me at once.â
Finally, the Butler met his gaze.
âMy Lord, Lady Madeline is requesting a visit to the mistressâ rooms.â For a moment, David did not understand. His lack of clarity must have shown in his expression for the butler continued to explain. âThe rooms once occupied by Lady Turton.â Clearing his throat, he looked away once more. âLady Madeline insists that you have given her permission to walk through each of the rooms. She stated that I did not need to disturb you and assured me that it was simply so that when the time came, she knew what she wished to do with the current décor and the like.â The manâs shoulders rounded. âI confess, my Lord, that I was quite unaware of any agreement that you had made with the lady and thus thought it best to come and confirm such arrangements with you.â The man spread his hands, shifting from one foot to the other. âI can only apologize if I have misstepped. That was not my intention.â
David was unprepared for the swell of anger which rose within him. It gripped him tightly, causing pain to ripple up through his chest. Gritting his teeth, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The last thing he needed to do was to lose his temper in front of his staff. They did not need to know that Lady Madeline had upset him so greatly.
Whatever does she think she is doing?
There had not been even the smallest conversation on this matter, and Lady Madeline had lied outright. Perhaps she had believed that the butler would not come to confirm such things with him, given the fact that she was soon to be mistress of this house. Regardless, David was even more angry with himself that he had ever thought a betrothal between them was the right step. Looking back, he saw now just how captured he had been by her beauty, despite the fact that he had known nothing of her character. Had he given himself only a few more days, David was sure that he would have quickly realized that Lady Madeline was not a wise choice for a bride.
âThank you for informing me, Burch.â
The butlerâs head lifted.
âWhat am I to do, my Lord?â
âYou are not to allow Lady Madeline into any of my late wife's rooms.â
Those rooms had been unoccupied for some years, but David was still unwilling to allow Lady Madeline entry. Indeed, Lady Turton had only been present in those rooms for a short while after their marriage, but David was not about to let Lady Madeline consider any of them her own.
